To the men of Florence Christian Church (and the women who love them),
Imagine a warm summers day walking by cool twin ponds or through an old-growth wood. Or perhaps wandering through an old cemetery and wondering about the life of those who walked these same trails before you. In the background you hear the bells of the archabbey calling the Benedictine monks to prayer, song, and chant. You come and sit in the bright cathedral as the abbot enters, carrying the burning incense and the monks follow, two by two and take their stations. You listen to the chanting and get carried away to another century.
These are just a few of the things available to you during a weekend retreat at St. Meinrad Archabbey in St. Meinrad, Indiana (about an hour west of Louisville). The Kentucky Region sponsors a Men’s Spiritual Life Retreat every year (yes, it is for men only).
What is it all about? It is a combination of fellowship with other Disciples men, videos and discussions of the topic, and time for reflection and relaxation. It is a wonderful opportunity to get away from work, TV, and the other distractions and focus on God’s perfect will for you. Free tours are available every day.
How do I know? I’ve been there, many times. The accommodations are great, clean and modern with private bathrooms. The food is excellent, a great variety and certainly more than enough to fill even the hungriest man. And the fellowship can’t be beat. I’m looking forward to this year; won’t you come along?
This year the retreat is Friday, July 28 through July 30 and the registration is due July 1.
The study this year is “Fathers and Sons: An autobiographical, biblical and spiritual reflection on the relationship between one father and son rooted in one relationship between Jesus and God”.
The Retreat Leader is Rev. David Shirey, Senior Minister Central Christian Church in Lexington. The cost is reasonable, registration, lodging, and meals for Friday and Saturday night is $260 for a single room or $197 for a shared room. Registration, lodging, and meals for Friday night only is $170 for a single room or $85 for a shared room. For those who stay on Saturday night, a Sunday morning service is held before departing. Moms, wives, and kids, this may be a special Fathers’ Day gift to the special guy in your life!
